Astigmatism can be found in both nearsighted and farsighted people. A normal cornea is shaped like half of a tennis ball. In someone with astigmatism, the cornea is misshapen like a spoon causing the images to focus on multiple places on the retina. Another form of astigmatism involves abnormalities in the shape of the lens. To correct for astigmatism, we will use toric lenses for glasses or contact lenses to convert those multiple focal points into one.
